Netbooks: The New Laptop

April 22nd, 2009

1

It occurred to me that netbooks could be perfect for businesses, especially for small businesses and mobile workforces. I’ve long been a firm believer that all employees in most businesses that use computers should have laptops. Laptops automatically increase productivity because workers can take the system home and keep working, if they choose to (some employees even work during the commute). Businesses have been reluctant to dole out laptops, though, because they’re typically more expensive and more fragile than desktops. When companies do give in and buy laptops, they have a habit of choosing heavy, slow desktop replacements. These things usually have cheap, underperforming parts and are too heavy and are a drag to lug back and forth to the office.

For business users who can’t use the smaller keyboard and 10-inch screen at the office: Have your company buy you a wide-screen display, a USB-powered mouse, and a keyboard, all for about $100. In the end, the company is still saving money and productivity.

AT&T Details 3G Upgrade

April 22nd, 2009

att_new_logo

AT&T will eventually switch over to Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology as the backbone of its 4G data and voice network like rival Verizon Wireless, bringing the GSM (AT&T) and CDMA (Verizon) carriers closer as they both will rely on the same wireless architecture. However, before AT&T makes the bold move to 4G, it will still continue breathing life into its HSPA 3G technology.

AT&T is already ramping up its networks to 7.2 Mbps of data transfer speeds on its HSPA networks. Part of the move, as an executive for the company has stated publicly in a rare move, is to prepare the carrier’s network for a summer iPhone launch that will be capable of the faster data speeds.

Later this year, and early 2010, AT&T will skip the HSPA 14.4 Mbps upgrade and instead jump to a protocol known as HSPA+ before making the switch to LTE. According to Telephony Online, AT&T has had problems with the 14.4 Mbps HSPA network implementation. Moreover, jumping to HSPA+ will give the network a theoretical transfer rate of 21 Mbps.

AT&T plans to double its 3G network capacity , migrating to 4G ?

April 20th, 2009

It’s a common complaint among iPhone users: The device is great, but the much-heralded 3G network, provided by AT&T, needs work. Now, it seems AT&T may be listening.

AT&T is testing increased download speeds on its 3G network, according to spokesman Geoff Mordock. The news first emerged in an interview with Scott McElroy, AT&T Mobility vice president of technology realization, in Telephony Online. The tests, if implemented, would bring the theoretical maximum speed to 7.2 megabits per second — double the current maximum speed.

AT&T is also increasing network capacity by adding new cell sites and nearly doubling the total network capacity in most markets via an additional spectrum at 850 MHz, according to Mordock. That frequency makes it easier to get coverage inside buildings. Network capacity determines how much information can be sent over the network, including calls and data connections.

AT&T has come under fire lately for its sluggish 3G speeds. It was sued in March for promising faster 3G speeds than were available, the latest in a long line of quibbles over 3G speed. The plaintiff in the March lawsuit said he could connect to the 3G network only periodically.

The news about the increased speeds comes at a strategically beneficial time to AT&T: last week, reports emerged that the wireless company was trying to extend its exclusive relationship with Apple until 2011.

New iPhone Ad Targets Small Business

April 20th, 2009

One of Apple’s new iPhone ads targets small businesses by showing them how they can use iPhone apps to process credit card transactions, print shipping labels and check on the delivery of an order.

http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/

“There’s an app for that” has become the standard refrain in a series of television advertisements that Apple runs during prime-time hours on commercial television. The ads show an iPhone in use with an off-screen narrator who describes all the things you can do on your iPhone, while The Submarines’ You Me and the Bourgeoisie plays in the background.

The new ad, entitled “Office” and available for viewing on Apple’s Web site, shows how small business users can use the iPhone to process credit card transactions using Inner Fence’s Credit Card Terminal application; print a shipping label for a package using Print & Share; and check on the status of a delivery with FedEx Mobile.

“Yup, there’s an app for just about anything,” concludes the narration. “Only on the iPhone.”
