Google Apps for local government

September 17th, 2009

googleEveryone benefits from cloud computing, though few stand to benefit more than government. The cloud helps agencies at all levels increase productivity, cut costs, keep pace with technology innovation, and become more open and transparent with their citizens.

That’s why we were pleased to join other industry leaders today at NASA’s Ames Research Center to hear Vivek Kundra, the CIO of the US Federal Government, announce the launch of Apps.gov. Apps.gov is an online storefront that makes it easy for federal agencies to browse and purchase cloud-based IT services from a variety of service providers, including Google. The cloud is coming of age, and we applaud the Obama Administration’s efforts to ensure our government realizes its many advantages.

We also want to do our part to make it easier for government to transition to cloud computing. We recognize that government agencies have unique regulatory and compliance requirements for IT systems, and cloud computing is no exception. So we’ve invested a lot of time in understanding government’s needs and how they relate to cloud computing. To help meet those requirements we’re taking two important steps:

  • FISMA certification for Google Apps. In July, we announced our intent to secure certification for Google Apps to demonstrate compliance with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), the law defining security requirements that must be met by all US Federal government information systems. Our FISMA process is nearing completion. We will submit a Certification and Accreditation (C&A) package to the U.S. Government before the end of this year. Upon review and approval of the Google Apps C&A package, agencies will be able to deploy Google Apps knowing that it is authorized to operate under FISMA.
  • Dedicated Google cloud for government customers in the US. Today, we’re excited to announce our intent to create a government cloud, which we expect to become operational in 2010. Offering the same services and features as our existing commercial cloud (such as Google Apps), this dedicated environment within existing Google facilities in the US will serve the unique needs of US federal, state, and local governments. It is similar to a “Community Cloud” as defined by the National Institute for Science and Technology. The government cloud will allow Google to manage and meet additional government policy requirements beyond FISMA.

Google releases Chrome 3

September 16th, 2009

logo_smGoogle has released its third major revision of Chrome. The updated browser boasts a 150% (25% over its most recent stable release) increase in javascript performance since the launch of version 1.

Other new features include a redesigned “new tab” page, an improved omnibox, themes capability, and HTML5 features.

Since Google has released Chrome it has taken a 2.8% market share. It is expected that the market share will continue to grow as more people become aware of the browser. Also, Google has been marketing its browser heavily to users who also use other Google products such as Gmail or Google search.

The browser marketplace is packed with heavy hitters from Microsoft, Apple, and Google. All of which are backed by massive corporations with seemingly unlimited resources. Other well known browsers that also provide serious competition to Chrome are Firefox and Opera.

Google Stretches Its Search Box

September 11th, 2009

Google increased the size of its home page’s search box and typeface Wednesday, making it easier for users to see long queries.

search has always been our focus. And, starting today, you’ll notice on our homepage and on our search results pages, our search box is growing in size. Although this is a very simple idea and an even simpler change, we’re excited about it — because it symbolizes our focus on search and because it makes our clean, minimalist homepage even easier and more fun to use. The new, larger Google search box features larger text when you type so you can see your query more clearly. It also uses a larger text size for the suggestions below the search box, making it easier to select one of the possible refinements

Google has enhanced the task feature that’s integrated into Gmail

August 22nd, 2009

gmail-tasksGoogle has enhanced the task feature that’s integrated into Gmail and other Google products to let users share their lists with others. Gmail users can now choose to share an entire task list in a new e-mail message. Doing so transfers all of your tasks including information like due dates, and any tasks that have been completed which show up as being crossed out.

One thing to note is that this only works in Gmail, and not in other places where tasks can be found, including Google Calendar, the mobile version of Gmail, and on iGoogle. Although knowing Google, the e-mailing feature will make its way to each of these places soon enough.

Gmail tasks is the one and only feature to “graduate” from Gmail labs, which is Google’s test bed for new and experimental features. The feature was launched in early December of last year, and graduated from labs last month. The rest of the labs-only features, including the 13 that were launched alongside the release of the labs program, continue to require user action to be enabled.

Google Chrome operating system (Google Chrome OS)

July 8th, 2009

logo_smIt’s been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

The Chrome OS is based on Linux and will run on both x86 and ARM microprocessors and Google claims to be “working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year.” Google’s vision is of a Web operating system running a browser and running Web applications within that instead of traditional PC applications.

Google Chrome OS

  • Its an open source, lightweight operating system targeted at netbooks
  • Later this year its code will be  open-source
  • By the second half of 2010 it will be available bundled with netbooks
  • Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS
  • OS to be built in a way to protect it from viruses, malware and security updates
  • Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips
  • Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from mobile Android

Google voice to set new standard in business

June 30th, 2009
167449-google-voice-logo_original

Google Voice is a front-end for all of your phones. It assigns you a new phone number that you can then use as your primary number. You then get to decide who gets routed to which of your phones, either individually or as part of a group. You can also personalize voice mail greetings depending on the caller.

Google Docs can open DOCX and XLSX files

June 2nd, 2009

google

When Microsoft released Office 2007, they updated key formats for saving files, including Word DOC, Excel XLS, and Powerpoint PPT files. These new file formats are effectively zipped XML text files (instead of the binary DOC, XLS, and PPT formats) and involve the adding of an “X” to the end of the old-style DOC, XLS, and PPT file extensions. Their introduction generated considerable controversy as Microsoft tried to get the ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) to certify them as a standard, a move which many viewed as an attempt by Microsoft to retain control of key file formats. Microsoft’s Office Open XML (OOXML) formats were put forward to try to stop the growing use by governments and business of ODF, the OpenDocument format.

Although Microsoft succeeded in having their Office 2007 file formats certified, they have also yielded to pressure from governments and businesses that want to use ODF (hence, Microsoft included the ability to read and write ODF in Service Pack 2 for Office 2007).

Now that more and more people are using Office 2007 and saving to the default XML formats, this has created a need for other software suites to be able to open these files. OpenOffice.org, for instance, now has built-in Office Open XML functionality. However, beyond straightforward DOCX and XLSX files, things aren’t so good outside the Microsoft Office universe. PPTX files in particular often lose a lot of formatting when opened in non-Microsoft programs.

According to PCPro, Google Docs has had to give in to keep up with the growing use of Microsoft’s formats. Now, DOCX and XLSX files can be opened without too much trouble in Google Docs. PPTX files, however, remain problematic. As it’s been some time since Microsoft’s OOXML formats were certified, it may appear to be something of a wonder that it has taken Google so long to incorporate the ability to open some, if not all, of those formats. While Google has for some time made it possible to HTML-view DOCX and XLSX files in Gmail and Google Search, it is only now that the company is integrating more complete importing features for those formats into Google Docs.

New in gmail labs: Inbox preview

June 1st, 2009

Whenever I open up my inbox at work, I’m never surprised to find several new messages waiting to be read. The same thing can’t always be said about my personal Gmail account. Sometimes I end up checking my mail only to find nothing new there.

No big deal, really. But now imagine that you access Gmail on a super slow connection from a remote place in Ethopia where it might take minutes to completely load your inbox. The disappointment is larger when you find out that there is nothing new to read and you could have saved all that time.

To ease this pain a bit, we created a new feature in Gmail Labs called Inbox Preview. While Gmail is loading, a simple, static preview of your inbox with your ten most recent messages is displayed. Turn it on from the Labs tab under Settings, and if you’re on a slow connection you’ll know from the start if it’s worth the wait.

Google Chrome 2.0 : download now

May 22nd, 2009

Improved New Tab Page: The most requested feature from users was the ability to remove thumbnails from the New Tab page. Now you can finally hide that embarrassing gossip blog from the Most Visited section.

Full Screen Mode: If you’ve ever given a presentation or watched a large video using Google Chrome, you might have wished you could use every last pixel on your screen for the content. Now you can hide the title bar and the rest of the browser window by hitting F11 or selecting the option in the Tools menu.

Form Autofill: Filling out your information in forms over and over again can be tedious. Form autofill helps by showing information you’ve previously entered into the same form fields automatically. If at any point you want to clear out your information, that’s easy to do from the Tools menu.

Increased Stability: Google Chrome is more stable than ever–we have fixed over 300 bugs that caused crashes since launch.

Increased Speed: Making the web faster continues to be our main area of focus. Thanks to a new version of WebKit and an update to our JavaScript engine, V8, interactive web pages will run even faster. We’ve also made sure that JavaScript keeps running fast even when you have lots of tabs open. Try opening a bunch of web applications and then running your favorite benchmark. You can read more about V8 in our JavaScript scalability post on the Chromium blog.

Google Gmail adds built-in search

May 2nd, 2009

Google has added the ability to search Google directly within Gmail, a move that increases the centrality of the e-mail service and gives Google a new opportunity to show advertisements.

The experimental feature, part of Gmail Labs, presents a search box to the left of a message you’re composing. Typing search terms in it pops up a miniature window with a handful of results, and an individual result or its URL can be copied into the e-mail message body or into a separate message.
