Google Apps for local government

September 17th, 2009

googleEveryone benefits from cloud computing, though few stand to benefit more than government. The cloud helps agencies at all levels increase productivity, cut costs, keep pace with technology innovation, and become more open and transparent with their citizens.

That’s why we were pleased to join other industry leaders today at NASA’s Ames Research Center to hear Vivek Kundra, the CIO of the US Federal Government, announce the launch of Apps.gov. Apps.gov is an online storefront that makes it easy for federal agencies to browse and purchase cloud-based IT services from a variety of service providers, including Google. The cloud is coming of age, and we applaud the Obama Administration’s efforts to ensure our government realizes its many advantages.

We also want to do our part to make it easier for government to transition to cloud computing. We recognize that government agencies have unique regulatory and compliance requirements for IT systems, and cloud computing is no exception. So we’ve invested a lot of time in understanding government’s needs and how they relate to cloud computing. To help meet those requirements we’re taking two important steps:

  • FISMA certification for Google Apps. In July, we announced our intent to secure certification for Google Apps to demonstrate compliance with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), the law defining security requirements that must be met by all US Federal government information systems. Our FISMA process is nearing completion. We will submit a Certification and Accreditation (C&A) package to the U.S. Government before the end of this year. Upon review and approval of the Google Apps C&A package, agencies will be able to deploy Google Apps knowing that it is authorized to operate under FISMA.
  • Dedicated Google cloud for government customers in the US. Today, we’re excited to announce our intent to create a government cloud, which we expect to become operational in 2010. Offering the same services and features as our existing commercial cloud (such as Google Apps), this dedicated environment within existing Google facilities in the US will serve the unique needs of US federal, state, and local governments. It is similar to a “Community Cloud” as defined by the National Institute for Science and Technology. The government cloud will allow Google to manage and meet additional government policy requirements beyond FISMA.

Netbooks: The New Laptop

April 22nd, 2009

1

It occurred to me that netbooks could be perfect for businesses, especially for small businesses and mobile workforces. I’ve long been a firm believer that all employees in most businesses that use computers should have laptops. Laptops automatically increase productivity because workers can take the system home and keep working, if they choose to (some employees even work during the commute). Businesses have been reluctant to dole out laptops, though, because they’re typically more expensive and more fragile than desktops. When companies do give in and buy laptops, they have a habit of choosing heavy, slow desktop replacements. These things usually have cheap, underperforming parts and are too heavy and are a drag to lug back and forth to the office.

For business users who can’t use the smaller keyboard and 10-inch screen at the office: Have your company buy you a wide-screen display, a USB-powered mouse, and a keyboard, all for about $100. In the end, the company is still saving money and productivity.

Skype could cut your business costs.

April 21st, 2009

VoIP (voice over IP) calls cost less than traditional phone systems, while adding additional features. Skype says that about 35 percent of its customers are using the service at work, so the company has tailored features to help that audience manage Skype and save money. Especially with the recent iPhone and BlackBerry clients, Skype could cut your business costs.

Skype for Business mainly differs from a consumer account because IT departments can deploy the software across an office. Features can be activated or disabled by your administrators, such as file transfers or sharing peer-to-peer Skype traffic. Group policy templates let you modify these features for several people at once.

Upcoming Skype for Business tools will connect to SIP phone systems, so you can make SkypeOut calls through SIP, while incoming SIP can be routed to your Skype account. Similar support for Asterisk is also planned. Both are being tested now, with pricing to be determined.

Otherwise, most of the Skype for Business features overlap with consumer Skype, such as video calls and instant messaging. But you still might know know about other business-ready tools that are available in either case.

The Business Control Panel manages multiple Skype accounts, such as those of your employees. You can buy Skype credits for outgoing calls or phone numbers for incoming connections, with the Control Panel making allocations across your network. Also, if one person’s balance runs low, the software can automatically usher in new funds from your central cache.

Several add-ons can make the rest of your PC Skype-aware. Tools for Outlook, Office, Explorer, and Firefox enable you to instantly dial phone numbers from within those applications. Just click to call. Current and upcoming tools from Salesforce.com and Lotus Live add similar features.

Skype is still adding more business-specific features. But its basic tools–and management options–already make it a cost-saving consideration for a small office.

Disable USB (make them read-only)

February 14th, 2009

In the corporate world, a lot of time is spent on locking down computers to minimize the risk of confidential information leaving the company.  With the popularity of USB storage devices in recent years the problem for large corporations has exploded. Almost all users want to use USB storage devices to move data around.  With the size of USB storage devices increasing so much in recent years, the risk is increasing as more and more data could possibly be stolen or lost accidentally. In companies, USB storage devices have been banned completely and disabled from use on company computers.

In Windows Vista there is an alternative that will allow your corporate users to be able to read from USB storage devices but not write any data to them. Effectively turning on USB storage devices for all users but making them read-only.  This way users can still read information off of USB  storage devices that a third-party vendor may provide data on while preventing the employee from writing any data back to the storage device.

To setup read only USB storage device operation, follow these steps below:

  1. Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate +  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl.
  3. Right click on Control and select New and then Key.  Call the new key StorageDevicePolicies.
  4. Right click on StorageDevicePolicies and select New and then Dword. Call the new dword WriteProtect.
  5. Right click on WriteProtect and select Properties. Set the value to 1 and hit OK.

The computer is now configured to disable writing to USB storage devices.

Seagate Joins 2-Terabyte (2,000 GB) Hard Drive Club

February 3rd, 2009

Seagate said Monday that the company will ship a 2-Tbyte drive this quarter, but for the enterprise.

Seagate announced both the 2.5-inch Constellation and the 3.5-inch Constellation ES on Monday. Both drives will ship with either a SATA or a Serial-Attached SCSI interface; the Constellation will be Seagate’s first to ship with a SAS 2.0 interface, the company said.

The Constellation’s capacity is an attention-getter, though: 2 terabytes, the same capacity that Western Digital said it had begun shipping last week for the enthusiast PC market.
